Be Less Helpful: Saving (Math) Education
Last week, I scheduled some time to participate in a webinar featuring Dan Meyer (http://blog.mrmeyer.com) hosted by O'Reilly Media. I encourage you to spend the time soaking at least Dan's first part (approx. 24 minutes) of this webinar regardless of your content or area of expertise:
I don't know about you, I found myself rewinding a few times to watching parts again and again. The concept here appears so simple, as he displays a photograph or series of photos depicting something from our immediate world. However, the thinking behind posing such photographs or multimedia goes far deeper. There are many layers to problems, questions and inquiries that he poses to his students... all of which are in the name of eliciting student intuition, inquiry and discovery. Oh, and the technology is invisible, meaning it is not the object of learning here.
The following graphic, captured during the webinar, lists Dan's tenets of approaching a learning experience. Where do you see these tenets in improving learning experiences for students?
