How familiar are you with the history of the Erie Canal? Do you know what famous actor is from Fairport, New York? Students in Erica Mayou's third grade class know these things and more and they are sharing it with YOU in the form of an episode on the Our City Podcast. To produce their "Famous Fairport" episode, which is the latest addition to the Our City Podcast, we used resources created by Tony Vincent at his Learning in Hand web site.
Podcasts are just one way in which students can share their new knowledge and creativity outside of their classroom. Podcasts offer students alternatives to traditional writing activities, promotes media literacy and encourages creativity and expression.
If you're a teacher and you would like to try your hand at podcasting, the Our City podcast is a great way to get started. Check out the Planning Packet (.pdf) and the Podcasting Booklet (.pdf) from Tony's site to learn more. Want to give it a go with some help? Contact one of the BOCES Instructional Technology Specialists to help you and your students.
Want to leave the students some feedback? Leave a comment below. If you are already podcasting we'd love to hear about it too! Place the web link in a comment below so we can listen in!
